HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL

'Going, gone '

Thursday, May 15, 2008,

Bob Fortuna,

Plain Dealer Reporter

Clinging to a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, Berea coach Mike Draves wanted more runs for some breathing room.

So he approached designated hitter Phil Eisner and told the senior to take his frustrations out on the ball. Eisner, who had gone hitless in his first two plate appearance, obliged.

The 6-2, 280-pounder pulled a no-ball, one-strike fastball over the 270-foot right center field fence to help give the host Braves a 5-2 victory over No. 8-seeded North Olmsted on Wednesday in a drizzled-drenched Division I sectional semifinal baseball game.

The win not only advanced seventh-seeded Berea (16-8) into today's sectional championship game at No. 4-seeded Westlake (13-8), it avenged two regular-season losses to its Southwestern Conference foe.

"[The ball] was right down the heart of the plate," said Eisner, referring to his home run. "When I hit it, I didn't know it would go over [the fence], but I was happy when it did."

So was Draves.

"We've been playing some good ball the last two weeks," Draves said. "Those two losses to North Olmsted kept us from competing for the conference [title] so it was nice to pay them back."

Eisner's homer allowed Derrick Paster's sixth-inning one-out, RBI-single down the third base line stand as the game-winning hit and allowed Braves senior pitcher David Jones to improve to 5-1.

"David's a competitor," said Draves, who watched his lefty rack up two strikeouts while limiting North Olmsted (8-16) to seven hits, four walks and a hit batsman. "He kept the ball low, moved it in and out and changed speeds well."

Niko Stanislav's single and double and Paster's two hits headed Berea's eight-hit counter. Mark Wayner delivered a two-out, two-RBI single to center field in the second inning after Mark Preston singled and Stanislav walked to stake the Braves to a 2-1 lead.

North Olmsted took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Christian Klinec singled to left center field, Chad Murphy walked and losing pitcher Dan Kitko plated Klinec with a two-out single that hugged the third base line.

"We left 10 guys stranded," Eagles coach Tim Murphy said. "Our guys played a good game, both teams played well considering the conditions. The difference was Berea got a couple key hits when they needed them and we didn't."

Braves Take Bite Out of Bulldogs!

Wednesday, April 16, 2008

The Braves sufficiently handled Olmsted Falls, 6-2 for the first victory in the conference.  Robbie Pavelka started the game for the Braves and went five innings, giving up no earned runs and striking out 8 Bulldogs!  Junior Corey Tuley relieved Pavelka, letting up two hits and one earned run.  Niko Stanislav went 3-4 from the plate with a run scored and has been hot lately.  Also Pavelka aided his cause by going 1-2 from the plate with two RBI’s and a run scored.  The Braves coupled great pitching with above average hitting to win the game against Olmsted Falls.  Berea will face their rival Midpark on Friday, which will definitely be an interesting match up.

Braves Bested By Eagles

Monday, April 14, 2008

The Braves dropped their third conference game to North Olmsted 4-2.  Berea High School Junior Baseball Player Derrick Paster slides in safely head first into third base.Junior, Derrick Paster, pitched five great innings, allowing two earned runs and striking out seven hitters.  Dave Jones relieved Paster for the final two innings of the game, allowing one hit and no runs.  Senior, Niko Stanislav, went 2-3 at the plate with two singles and a run.  Aside from pitching, Paster went 1-2 from the dish, with a double and an RBI.  The Braves fielding was subpar, as the infield committed two key errors which were the difference in the game.  The Braves had ten hits but could not perform well in the clutch.  Even though Berea could not pull out the victory, the hitting really improved from their last few games.  Hopefully the Braves can bring it all together and pick up a win in their next game against Olmsted Falls.

Braves Stung By Bee's and Brecksvilles Venditti

Thursday, April 10, 2008

Brecksville handed Berea their second conference loss, beating the Braves 4-0.  Robbie Pavelka pitched six strong innings, giving up one earned run and walking no batters!  Unfortunately for Pavelka, the Brecksville's Junior pitcher Nick Venditti (1-0) went all seven innings only giving up one hit.  The Braves struggled in the field and at the plate, committing seven errors and only getting one hit.  The hit came in the sixth inning at the hands of Junior Kris Medaglia, who ripped a shot past the shortstop.  Pavelka also struck out four batters in his first conference start.  Venditti struck out six and walked none. The Braves have had some shaky hitting over the past few games but look to get their sticks back in their next game against North Olmsted.

Braves Rebound against Rocky River

Tuesday, April 08, 2008

After a tough loss to Westlake, the Braves refocused and beat Rocky River 9-1.  Derrick Paster pitched all seven innings for the Braves, allowing only three hits and one run, which came in the first inning.  He also recorded eight strikeouts and four walks.  As the game went in to the top of sixth inning, the score was 1-1, but the Braves put together an eight run inning to seal the game.  Sophomore standouts, Nate Miceli and Berea High School Baseball First Baseman Zach Bauer stretches to secure an out at First Base.Zach Bauer, contributed to the Braves win.  Miceli went 1-2 at the plate with a walk, a RBI, and a run.  Bauer (pictured left), who has played a solid first base for the Braves, picked ball after ball and saved throws that would have otherwise been considered errors.  Also Kris Medaglia, the Braves junior third baseman, went 2-2 from the dish with a walk, two runs, and a RBI.  Medaglia was also responsible for starting off the Braves eight run sixth inning.  The Braves stepped up in this game and proved that they are a formidable power.

Braves Drop Heatbreaker to Demons

Monday, April 07, 2008

The Braves suffered their third loss of the season 7-5, Berea High School Pitcher Robbie Pavelka pitches the Braves to a Winat the hands of the Westlake Demons.  Dave Jones received the start and, for the most part, threw an efficient game, allowing three earned runs on three hits.  A few missed calls and some mistakes in the field proved to be the catalyst for the Westlake victory.  The Braves committed six errors in the field, which greatly affected the outcome of the game.  Robbie Pavelka relieved Jones, allowing two runs.  At the plate, Jones went 2-3 with 2 RBI’s and a run.  But other than that the Braves bats were mostly dead.  Westlake scored 2 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 7-5 lead, and despite the tenacity of the Braves, Berea could not come away with the victory.

Berea Pulls Out Narrow Victory Against Invaders!

Thursday, April 03, 2008

The Braves captured their second victory of the season, beating the Normandy Invaders 2-1.  Senior Robbie Pavelka, pitched five strong innings, giving up only 1 unearned run and 1 hit.  Pavelka also had seven strikeouts, as he was nearly untouchable.  Junior Derrick Paster relieved Pavelka, notching the win by hurling 2 scoreless innings, allowing only 2 hits. Pavelka and Pastor combined for 9 strikeouts, 3 hits, and no earned runs. Paster also contributed with his bat, going 3-3 at the dish with 3 doubles. Paster drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning ripping a hanging curve ball down the left field line after Junior Cory
Tuley
got his first hit of the season at a crucial time slapping a single to right to knot the game at 1.  The Braves pitching staff has been phenomenal, combining for 16 strikeouts and allowing no earned runs in the team’s 2 wins.  The bats were slightly dead today, but the Braves offense looks to redeem themselves as they travel south this Saturday to face New Albany High School in a double header with games at 12:00 and 2:00 in the Northern Columbus suburb!  On Sunday, the Braves will be guests of the Ohio State Buckeyes baseball team as they take on the Minnesota Gophers.

Junior Varsity Recap

Braves Baffle Raiders In Lid Lifter Of 2008 Season!

Wednesday, April 02, 2008

In front of a packed house at Berea High, the Berea Braves varsity started off the ’08 hardball season with an 11-0, 5 inning mercy rule victory against the Colombia Raiders in their cold season opener.  Braves ace, Dave Jones, went five strong innings allowing only one hit and no earned runs with six strikeouts.  The Braves bats were on fire in the game as they totaled 11 runs on 8 hits. Derrick Paster, a new addition to the Braves, went 1-2 with 3 RBI’s and a double.  Seniors Mark Preston and Robbie Pavelka and Sophomore Nate Miceli also contributed to the action.  Preston went 1-2 with one RBI and a run, Pavelka went 2-3 with 2 RBI’s and a double and Miceli was 2-2 with one RBI.  The Braves flashed some of their exciting team speed with a slick double steal by Senior Niko Stanislav swiping second and Sophomore Nate Miceli taking home.  The Braves played perfect defense behind Jones, as they committed no errors.  With the Braves great pitching staff and big hitters, the team will definitely be a force to be reckoned with in the Southwestern Conference this season.
