Tom was born and raised in Berea. He started
his baseball career in the Berea Baseball Association before moving
on to the BBAT travel teams. He attended Berea High School and
graduated in 2004. While at Berea he was a three-time all-conference
selection and MVP in 2004. He helped lead the Braves to back-to-back
conference titles in 2003 and 2004 and a birth in Regional’s in
2003.
After Berea he went on to play
baseball at the University of Akron where he was a four year starter
for the Zips.
After his freshman year he finished with the seventh lowest ERA in
the conference. In 2006 he played for the Bourne Braves of the Cape
Cod Baseball league where he was an all-star that summer. After the
summer had ended he was rated as the #20 prospect in the league and
the #76 prospect in all of college baseball according to Baseball
America.
In 2007 He was drafted by the
Minnesota twins in the 20th round of the MLB draft.
However, he turned it down to return to school and was picked up
again in 2008. Once again things didn’t work out and he returned
again for his fifth year. By the end of his career at Akron he
finished in the top 10 all-time in strikeouts, appearances’, and
innings pitched.
Tom currently works as a
financial advisor for Northwestern Mutual and lives in Medina with
his wife Liz.
