GAME RECAPS

June 5th - BRAVES DROWN THE SHOREMEN

The Braves are starting the month of June as hot as the current weather.  They made it two in a row on BBAT Travel Day at Groza.  The 11 – 5 victory was the best all around game of the season.

Adam Fellner started on the mound and pitched four good innings.  After giving up 3 runs in the first, he settled down in the next innings.  He struck out 5 while only issuing 3 walks.  Matt Devney relieved in the fifth and held Avon Lake scoreless for the rest of the game.  He only gave up two hits while striking out 4 Shore men.  He’s developing confidence in his change – up as his “out” pitch with 2 strikes.

Offensively, several Braves had major contributions.  Adam Fellner went 4 – 4 with a double.  Daniel Halko went 3-4 with a triple.  Matt Devney went 3 – 4 with 2 RBI’s and 3 runs scored.  A.J. Perry got 4 RBI’s on 2 – 4 with a towering double to the fense.  Ray Klebowski had 2 singles and made his presence known on the bases today.

The Braves played well in all three phases of the game.  At the plate, 18 hits on the day.  Defensively, only 2 errors and the pitching struck out 9 guys while giving up 4 bases on balls.  Maybe, we have the start of a winning streak!

June 2nd - BRAVES TOP WESTLAKE

The Berea U13 boys prevailed at home on Wednesday evening.  They topped Westlake 7-6; scoring the winning run in the bottom of the sixth on Ray Klebowski’s steal of home on a passed ball.

The boys in blue got excellent pitching today.  Sean Weber pitched 3 solid innings before turning the game over to Daniel Halko in the fourth inning.  Halko got grooved in quickly, only giving up one unearned run to close out the game.  He struck out 5.

The bats woke up in the fourth after trailing much of the game.  Adam Fellner contributed 3 hits.  Connor Ticherich drove a bases - loaded double to the fence in the left to tie the game up.  Kyle Niksa and Daniel Halko had productive days at the plate.

Although there were no clear Web-gems, the defense is showing signs of tightening up a bit.

May 25th - STING CRUSH THE BRAVES

The Braves hosted the Medina Stings at Dora Lee on Tuesday evening.  We got crushed 17 – 6.  Bad attitudes prevailed from some guys again.  They need to realize that they look like “immature, pouty, little boys” who can’t handle a little challenge or adversity.

Jake Lester started on the mound and struggled through three innings.  Connor Ticherich jumped on the hand grenade and finished the game out.

Offensively, the Braves got one run in the second.  Matt Devney reached on error and stole second.  Joe Condon scored him with a solid single into centerfield.  Berea had a mini rally in the fourth.  Connor Ticherich doubled to the fence in right center.  Devney lined a single to center to scoring Connor.  Devney advanced on the throw home.  Joe Condon got his second hit of the day down the left field line for another RBI.  A couple of walks and a groundout followed.  Daniel Halko singled in the final 2 runs.  The game ended mercifully after 6 innings.

May 22nd - BRAVES DROP ANOTHER CLOSE ONE

The Braves traveled to Avon Lake on Saturday to take on the Shoreman.  They lost in the bottom of the seventh 6 – 5.  It was another back – and – forth competitive game today.  Pizza followed the game which took the edge off the close loss.

Sean Weber was outstanding on the mound.  He grilled the Shoreman for six innings, walking one and only giving up 2 earned runs.  Matt Devney relieved with the score tied in the seventh.  An infield single, passed ball, walk, and a botched double play grounder led to the bases loaded sac. fly that sunk the Braves.

Offensively, The Berea boys had to scuffle to produce runs.  In the fourth, Connor Ticherich and Devney both reached on errors with 2 outs.  A.J. Perry had a clutch single to cash both runners in.  Sean Weber had heads – up base running in the sixth which allowed him to tie the score on a hard hit ball by Adam Fellner that Avon muffed.

Defensively, there were no real Web Gems today.  The overall performance and attitude were better.  The boys just need to start playing serious baseball before the fourth inning.

May 16th - BRAVES TOP UNDEFEATED AVON

The chance for redemption from the previous day came on Sunday, as Berea traveled to Avon.  The Avon team was sporting a 3-0 record.  The Braves found some PRIDE and put together a solid game performance to gain a 12-8 victory.

Coach Ticherich used an old ploy and pulled the slumping middle of the line-up and batted them 7-8-9.  This move got the attention of the Fellner, Ticherich, Devney threesome.  It also confused the outfielders from Avon as they got burned twice.  Fellner went 3 – 4 with a bases loaded double.  Ticherich went 2-4 with a double to the fence.  Devney went 2-3 with a walk, 4 runs scored and 2 RBI’s.  Fellner plated 5 RBI’s on the day.

Other offensive contributions came from Jake Lester and Sean Weber who contributed key two - out hits in the last inning.  The Braves led 9- 8 in the top of the seventh.  With 2 outs, Devney beat out a ball in the hole at shortstop.  Fellner singled him to second.  Weber dropped a blooper into short right.  Devney beat the high throw home.  Fellner and Weber both advanced on the throw.  Jake Lester dropped a single in the identical spot to cash both Fellner and Weber to give the Braves a 12-8 lead.  Kyle Niksa and Daniel Halko both contributed hits at the plate.  Weber and Lester each had two a piece.

Pitching – wise, Daniel Halko had another solid outing on the mound.  He went 4 1/3 innings walking one and hitting two.  He induced a lot of ground ball outs and showed good command and control.  Matt Devney relieved with guys on second and third and one out in the fifth.  He squelched the rally and held the lead by striking out both Avon hitters he faced.  He pitched a scoreless 6th and 7th inning to preserve the victory.

Devney got the day’s Web – gem by snagging a line drive smash back at him that could have altered his family history.

May 15th - HORNET’S STING BRAVES INTO A COMA

The Braves hosted cross-town rival Middleburg Heights on Saturday afternoon.  The Hornets stung the Braves early and anaphylactic shock set in.  The final, 17-1.

To describe the game action in one word or less --- PATHETIC!

May 10th - BRAVES GET FIRST WIN

The Braves traveled to Copley on Monday evening and bested the Westside Stars 11-3.  Berea got masterful pitching from “the new kid”.  What’s his name?  Joe Banner?  No! He’s the Incredible Hulk.  This kid was a “lean mean pitching machine.”  Could it be Sergeant Hulka?  No!  This young phenom’s name is Daniel Halko.  His line:  79 pitches, 3K’s, 1 walk, 2 hits, and 0 earned runs.

Offensively, the Braves struck early.  Sean Weber and Jake Lester started with singles.  Adam Fellner singled to score both.  Matt Devney reached on an error, scoring Fellner to take a 3 – 0 lead.  Copley scored once in the first inning and twice in the fifth.  Berea kept steady pressure on the defense of Copley by maintaining base-runners most innings.  Halko, A.J. Perry, Ray Klebowski, and Kyle Niksa each contributed hits at the plate.

It was Halko’s day to shine!  “That’s the fact, Jack!”

May 7th - WESTLAKE NIPS BRAVES

Despite playing their best all-around game to date, the Braves fell 4-3.  The winning run crossed in the bottom of the 7th to crush the Berea boy’s efforts prior to the deluge that evening.

Sean Weber pitched a stellar four innings giving up one hit and walking only one batter.  He got great defensive support from Ray Klebowski who ran down two early inning rocket shots.  Daniel Halko also had a seat-of-the-pants Web-Gem in the third inning.  The game was tied 1-1 after four innings

Adam Fellner relieved Weber.  A couple walks and an error led to 2 runs in the bottom of the fifth.  The Braves rallies for one run in the sixth.  Matt Devney reached on an error, taking second on an errant throw.  Daniel Halko singled him to third and Joe Condon cashed the run in on an infield ground-out.  The Braves tied the game in the top of the seventh.  Jake Lester led off with a single.  Fellner hit into a fielder’s choice and stole second.  Connor Ticherich followed with a deep double down the left field line to plate Fellner.  – 3 to 3 in the middle of the seventh.

A lead off walk followed by a couple of wild pitches led to Westlake plating the winning run with no outs in the seventh.  It was a solid effort today despite the defeat.

May 2 – BRAVES STUNG BY MEDINA STING:

The Braves traveled to Medina to play the Sting.  The overcast day produced another defeat; 15-5.

The game started on an encouraging note as Sean Weber got HBP.  Jake Lester grounded him to second.  Adam Fellner then went yard and blasted a home-run over the fence.  Connor Ticherich and Matt Devney followed with singles, but the rally got extinguished with just 2 runs across.

Daniel Halko opened on the mound and had great success the first time through the batting order.  Two Web-Gems kept the Sting from getting runners on base.  Sean Weber stabbed a sinking line drive on his shoe tips in the first.  Matt Devney dove and caught a smash at third in the second.  The Sting hitters found their groove in the third against Halko.  He was relieved by Matt Devney.  Devney again induced a lot of ground balls but errors led to a long inning.  A dropped pop-up, muffed ground ball and a double play ball through the wickets at short kept runners on base.  Devney got all three put-outs himself defensively from the mound.  The Braves trailed 10-3.

Berea pushed across a couple more runes in the fourth and fifth, but the damage was done.

Adam Fellner and Ray Klebowski got opportunities in relief prior to the run rule being enforced.

Some bright spots offensively, Jared Paul and Ray Klebowski contributed their first hits.  Halko hit a long double in the gap and strikeouts were limited today.  Again, seeing Adam at school make sure to congratulate him on his homer, but also ask him what an “Ephus Pitch” is!

May 1st - BRAVES DROP HOME OPENER:

The U-13 Braves fell to the Brunswick Blue Sox 7-0.  The two week lay-off from live pitching hampered the Braves offensively.  Five hits couldn’t produce runs.  Sean Weber’s bat produced three hits.  Jake Lester and Kyle Niksa each had a base knock.  The free – swinging middle of the order produced 7 K’s in their 9 at – bats.

Good pitching kept the Braves in the game despite some shaky defense.  Jake Lester went five solid innings but was victimized for 3 unearned runs on muffed balls.  Matt Devney contributed 2 innings of fine relief.  He gave up one unearned run and didn’t allow a ball out of the infield, contributing 3 put-outs from the mound.  Combined only 3 walks were issued.

The “Web Gem” of the game was Ray Klebowski’s throw to Connor Ticherich at the plate to complete a double play on a sacrifice fly attempt.
